Christine Klassen Gallery is pleased to present Lisa Matthias in her first solo exhibit at CKG.
‘Field Notes’ is a collection of abstracted woodcut prints inspired by botanical and zoological forms that often resemble man-made constructions. Matthias draws on her background as a biologist as she explores repetition and the interconnectedness of species and all scales of life at a microscopic level.
“These works are abstract and referential, expressive and structured, constructed and dismantled, balanced and unsteady. Like any organism, the figurative component of each composition is to some degree interwoven with its environment,” says Matthias. “The pieces contemplate habitat, home, shelter, nest, pattern, recurrence, organization, and connectedness, from a variety of perspectives.”
Matthias holds a Master of Fine Art from the University of Alberta, a Master of Science from the University of Manitoba, and currently resides in Edmonton, AB. Her work has been exhibited in Western Canada, the US, Scotland, Slovakia and Japan.
