Opening Reception & Artist Talk: Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014 - 1pm
"Penumbrae" is Ulrich Panzer’s first solo show with the Christine Klassen Gallery. The exhibit focusses on a new body of work, that shows the transition from the artists previous series, "spheres", to paintings that now have only one circular shape in the centre.
What was previously a dynamic interplay of multiple colour circles is now concentrated in one central form that radiates light and colour. These new paintings are inspired by a synesthetic perception of sound or musical chords, by observations in nature or by the colours of minerals and seashells. Yet, in the process of painting, these references are transcended and the works take on a life on their own, and as such they do nothing less than draw the viewer into the present tense of seeing.
Ulrich Panzer is a German artist who currently lives near Kingston, Ontario. He has studied the properties of sound, colour and architectural proportions since the early nineties. His knowledge has deepened through intense travelling and exposure to several western and eastern cultures . This also resulted in numerous light and sound installations. In addition, Panzer has given workshops and lectures on the healing aspects of colour, sound and space internationally.
