French painter Jean-François Gromaire grew up exploring the world from an artist’s point of view, spending time as a boy in museums and amongst the Parisian art scene with his grandfather, Marcel Gromaire, who was a well-known artist and professor in France. But it wasn’t until the mid-nineties, after a varied work history—everything from organic farmer to helicopter pilot—and extensive travel across three continents, that he began painting in earnest.
Gromaire's abstract canvases are playful expressions of his life-long exploration of historical alchemy and oil paint. Using the earth and its mysteries as muse, his paintings unfold a visual vocabulary of movement, texture and sheen, while incorporating surprising materials like bitumen. In his own words: “The incredible beauty of abstract art is that we can find any type of emotion inside and it offers endless possibilities for different interpretations.”
